In the winter of 2015, Holland’s number one hip-hop label Top Notch shipped off a fleet of promising young rappers and producers to the small island of Schiermonnikoog, a 45-minute ferry trip off the country’s north coast. In two weeks’ time, they wrote and recorded an album called New Wave, which was released in April. With Ronnie Flex as its most established star, the collective also includes popular upstarts like Lil’ Kleine, Bokoesam, Idaly and Lijpe. If you want to what’s up with Dutch rap’s new generation, look no futher.
